Free Speech in the Firehouse
The FDNY firefighters who booed NY AG Letitia James will be punished and face reeducation.
FDNY firefighters are now being asked to turn themselves in or risk being hunted down.

After Letitia James catapulted to notoriety through her prosecution of President Trump, she has recently found herself in the spotlight again, this time for the heroic actions of New York firefighters.
During a speech intended to promote a new FDNY chaplain, Pamela Holmes, firefighters from the department began to boo James and chant “Trump! Trump! Trump!” in protest. Letitia James, responded, “Oh come on. We’re in the House of God.” Despite the disruption, she concluded her speech by expressing her intention to “pray for the firefighters”, regardless of the heckling.
Now, it’s puzzling why a woman who claims to have strong faith would actively support the Biden administration and pursue the seizure of Trump’s assets. In fact, she has openly boasted about observing 40 Wall Street daily, which hardly aligns with a godly demeanor. As the Bible admonishes, “Do not gloat when your enemy falls, when they stumble, do not let your heart rejoice; or the Lord will see and disapprove and turn.” (Proverbs 24:17-18)
Regardless of one’s religious beliefs, perhaps Letitia James should reflect on these words before condemning the actions of these firefighters in a place of worship. Before casting judgment, it would be wise for her to introspect.
Now, in the aftermath of the firefighters exercising their freedom of speech, they face reprimand for their actions. Emails and letters circulating within the department, as seen in the linked tweet, outline why the Uniformed Fire Officers Association (UFOA) deems their behavior inappropriate. The Bureau of Investigation and Trials (BITS) is actively identifying members involved, who will be required to attend HQ sessions to understand the gravity of their actions.
FDNY Commissioner Laura Kavanagh has pledged to pursue these firefighters for discipline, warning that clear video evidence exists, and they will be contacted if they don’t come forward voluntarily.
This raises fundamental questions about our First Amendment rights. Is dissent permissible only when convenient? To intimidate these firefighters, who risk their lives daily, into silence is unjust. Their voices, regardless of circumstance, deserve to be heard.
Is there ever a “right time” to protest? The UFOA suggests firefighters should engage in political activities off-duty, but in proximity to Letitia James, was there a more opportune moment to exercise their rights? AOC encapsulated it well in a tweet, stating, “The whole point of protesting is to make ppl uncomfortable. Activists take that discomfort w/ the status quo & advocate for concrete policy changes.”
Ironically, when AOC faced protests herself, she didn’t respond favorably. Yet, discomforting those in power, as these firefighters did, is a cornerstone of protest. Shouldn’t their courage be applauded, especially considering their commitment to New York’s safety?
Would we have admonished Rosa Parks for refusing to yield her bus seat in 1955? Her act of defiance ignited the Montgomery Bus Boycott and reshaped history. Just as these firefighters challenged Letitia James, we must allow space for dissent, for it is in such moments that history is often made. We owe them that much.
