Ohio’s Ballot Battle:
A near miss for Republicans

In another surprising turn of events, the technical issue that had emerged in Ohio that would have forced President Joe Biden off the state’s ballot in the upcoming 2024 election, has been fixed. The unexpected development had thrown a curveball into the political arena, with lawmakers scrambling to find a solution that would ensure Biden’s inclusion on the ballot.

The crux of the issue lay in Ohio’s state law, which requires presidential and vice-presidential nominees to be certified to the secretary of state or nominated through one of several manners on or before the ninetieth day before the day of the general election. This year, the deadline falls on August 7, which is two weeks before the Democratic National Convention where Biden is set to be formally nominated.

Republicans, who dominate Ohio’s legislature, found themselves in a favorable position. The state’s Republican Secretary of State, Frank LaRose, underscored the necessity of adhering to these long-established rules. This stance drew criticism from Democrats, who accused the GOP of leveraging the law for political gain. Ohio Republicans viewed this situation as an opportunity to push for additional electoral changes.

Ohio’s Republican governor, Mike DeWine, called for a special legislative session to address this issue. The goal was to pass legislation that would adjust the state’s election deadline, ensuring Biden’s name appears on the ballot. However, the process became complicated by a partisan legislative fight over a provision that would also have prohibited foreign money from influencing state ballot campaigns.

The Ohio House and Senate had been grappling with the issue, with the Senate passing a version of the bill that included the prohibition on foreign nationals donating to Ohio ballot campaigns. However, this move stalled the legislation in the House, where Democrats had opposed the additional restrictions on foreign financial requirements included in the bill.

As the special session continued, the fate of Biden’s place on Ohio’s ballot hung in the balance. Lawmakers were under pressure to reach a compromise that would allow Biden to be certified in time for the election. The outcome of this legislative battle would have had significant implications for the 2024 presidential race. However, the Republican Party was well aware of the legal battlegrounds that the Democrats have made for our Presidential candidate in court.

Unfortunately for Trumpers, Republican Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, has signed legislation to guarantee that President Joe Biden will be listed on the state’s ballot in the upcoming November election. This new law, which adjusts the state’s candidate filing deadline, was signed on Sunday. However, Republicans were able to use that leverage to pass the bill that prohibits contributions to state ballot campaigns from foreign nationals. Both measures are set to become effective on August 31st.

The Ohio ballot issue served as a stark reminder of the complexities and challenges that can arise in the electoral process. As lawmakers worked to resolve this technical issue, the nation watched closely, aware that the outcome could have far-reaching consequences for the upcoming presidential election. I truly was hoping the Democrats would get a taste of their own medicine. They use these types of tactics to keep our Presidential nominee off the ballot, and I was rooting for us to finally return the favor.
