Mexico Challenges Google Over
'Gulf of America' Name Change

Mexico has expressed strong opposition to Google Maps’ implementation of ‘Gulf of America’ for U.S. users, following President Trump’s executive order renaming the Gulf of Mexico. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has even threatened legal action against Google, arguing that the name change disregards international recognition of the Gulf.

The U.S. has long shared the Gulf with Mexico, and Google’s approach—displaying ‘Gulf of America’ for American users while keeping ‘Gulf of Mexico’ for others—seems to strike a fair balance. Despite this, Sheinbaum insists on challenging a U.S. policy decision that affects American maps and American audiences.

While Mexico may dispute the decision, it ultimately has no legal authority over how a private U.S. company labels American territorial waters. This lawsuit, if pursued, is unlikely to succeed.
