Noncitizens Should Not Be Voting in Presidential Elections: Defending the Integrity of American Democracy
With less than 30 days until the election, the Biden-Harris Department of Justice is filing an unprecedented lawsuit against me and the Commonwealth of Virginia, for appropriately enforcing a 2006 law to remove noncitizens from the voter rolls.
Virginians – and Americans – will…

The Department of Justice (DOJ) has recently filed a lawsuit against Virginia, claiming that the state is improperly removing voters from its rolls, which has sparked a broader debate about the integrity of our elections and who should have the right to vote. According to the DOJ, Virginia’s process allegedly targets noncitizens who were added to voter rolls, resulting in their removal. This legal dispute underscores a fundamental question about our democracy: Should noncitizens have the right to vote in U.S. presidential elections?
As Republicans, the answer is a resounding no. Noncitizens should not be voting in presidential elections—period. The right to vote is a sacred privilege that should be reserved for American citizens alone. Our nation’s elections determine not just the direction of our policies but also the very identity of our nation, and it is essential that only those with a stake in that identity—American citizens—have a say in its future.
The DOJ’s lawsuit against Virginia raises significant concerns. While the DOJ claims that the state is improperly striking voters off the rolls, Virginia argues that it is acting within its rights to ensure that noncitizens are not participating in elections where only U.S. citizens should have a voice. The very fact that this issue is being litigated highlights a dangerous trend where noncitizens are being granted voting rights in some jurisdictions, eroding the value of American citizenship.
In recent years, we’ve seen a growing push from the left to expand voting rights to noncitizens in local elections, with some even advocating for these rights in federal elections. This is a slippery slope that could undermine the integrity of our electoral system. Allowing noncitizens to vote dilutes the votes of American citizens and compromises the democratic principles upon which this country was built.
There’s no doubt that some states are taking the necessary steps to protect their voter rolls. Virginia, for example, is actively trying to ensure that only eligible citizens are voting in their elections, but they now find themselves under fire from the DOJ. It’s telling that while states like Virginia are attempting to maintain the integrity of their electoral systems, the federal government seems more concerned with challenging these protections rather than supporting them.
The right to vote should come with the responsibility of citizenship. Our nation was founded on the principles of self-governance, and that means that the people who make decisions about our leaders and policies should be those who are fully invested in our country’s success—American citizens. Allowing noncitizens to vote is not just an insult to the millions of legal immigrants who have worked hard to become U.S. citizens; it’s also a threat to the integrity of our electoral system.
For Republicans, this issue is clear. We must stand firm in our belief that voting is a right that comes with citizenship. It’s not just about protecting the sanctity of our elections; it’s about preserving what it means to be an American. We cannot allow noncitizens to have the same influence over our government as those who have sworn their loyalty to this nation.
The debate over Virginia’s actions and the DOJ’s response should serve as a wake-up call to all who value the principles of American democracy. As we approach the 2024 presidential election, it’s crucial that we defend the right to vote as a privilege reserved for American citizens only. Republicans must continue to advocate for stronger voter ID laws, clean voter rolls, and election integrity measures to ensure that our elections remain free and fair.
In the end, this is about safeguarding the future of our nation. If we allow noncitizens to participate in our presidential elections, we risk diluting the very foundation of our democracy. The stakes are high, and we must act to protect the integrity of our voting process and uphold the value of American citizenship.
